A day at Mahahual March 23, 2022 deb flewelling Four years ago, we came to Mahahual with Eric and Cherie for 10 days and had such a great time. We had a beautiful house, about 7 kms from town, down a very bumpy beach road. It was so bumpy, it took us longer to drive it than it would have if we walked it. The road today was much smoother and many of the old abandoned buildings were now built back up with people living in them. Since we were so close, we decided to make a beach day of it and come visit again. It had grown dramatically and we could tell why, there were 3 cruise ships in port. This used to be a sleepy little town where only 1 ship came in every couple of days. There are now beautiful resort hotels lining the malocan and lots of people. The sea grass can be a challenge but most of the beaches were fenced with a net (you can see it in the background) so the swimming areas were clean, and there were lots of chairs to lounge in. It was a windy day (as my hair will attest to) and the surf was up. There was a lone wind surfer out and he was very fun to watch as he made his sport look so easy.
