La Casa Azul

This is our first home in Merida and I affectionatly call it the blue house. We are right in the middle of the center of the city and as you can see in the primary picture, the dwellings are all connected by concrete walls. They don’t waste an inch of space. In some areas, the only way you can differentiate one place from another is the color they paint it. We are in a neighborhood so all the dwellings are residences. However, you go up one block towards El Centro and they are a mix of residences and businesses. In some cases, the businesses are in front and residences in the back.

It looks small from the main picture, but it is deceiving as the dwelling space is only about 30-40 feet wide. But, it has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen/living area, 2 courtyards and a large backyard. How can this be you say? The property may not be very wide but it goes 200-300 feet back with high rock or concrete walls all around. It is very private and protected.

Above is the view from the kitchen area onto the patio. It has beautiful shade trees, a fabulous little pool for cooling off and a great view of the iquana’s who sun themselves on the brick wall.

This is our favorite place in the heat of the day.

When we first arrived, we were a little concerned with how close we were to el centro but it has turned out to be my most favorite spot. We are approximilatly 1 mile to the open air market, the cathederal, the park square, and anything else you could possible want or need. It’s an easy walk either in flip flops or tennis shoes but the footwear choice depends on how fast you want to go.

What a fun week is ahead of us.
