Cozumel-touring w/friends
Up early to catch the ferry over to Cozumel and the water wasn’t too bad. It can get pretty hairy if the winds are up, but we had 8-10 foot swells with 6-8 second so it was a comfortable ride. A special treat was in store for us. Dan and Katy, friends from home, arrived the same morning on a cruise ship and we were spending the day together. We all met up at our Cozumel ‘home’, had a very nice rental jeep delivered, and off we went to explore the island and enjoy the day.
Having been here before, we headed to some of my favorite spots on the windward (south) side of the island. Many years ago, Cozumel was hit by nasty hurricane Wilma which destroyed much of the north and east portions of the island. I was looking forward to seeing how it had flourished. First stop was the water spouts where surf shoots up through the holes in the coral. It’s beautiful to watch and very fun trying to figure out which hole is going to blow so you’re not caught in the spray. Another favorite is Coconut’s bar on the bluff overlooking the water. We enjoyed a good meal and a very cute little puppy who was determined to take off with Keith’s sandal and hide it.
There are a few more restaurants and beach destinations on this side of the island than before, but there still isn’t any electricity and the landscape hasn’t changed. One thing was very noticable - the lack of garbage. In the old days, cruise ships were allowed to dump their trash overboard and the beachs were filled with everything you could imagine. Today they are clean and fun to walk on again.
Fun pictures of the day are in the gallery.
