Tamarindo-Playa Grande
Playa Grande is located just outside of Tamarindo, a 90 minute drive from Liberia. The road was a 2 lane paved highway and yes, that is important as you will see later on. We limited our travel time between destinations to no more than 3 hours so we could spend most of the day playing and exploring.
First order of business was food, so we stopped at Europa German bakery on the roadside for a yummy breakfast and pasteries.
… actually we stopped for pasteries and found a yummy breakfast… There are priorities in life especially when you are on vacation.
Next stop was a sporting goods store to get water toys. This old jeep was sitting outside and I couldn’t help but chuckle when I thought of our Pink Jeep tour in Sedona. She ‘looked’ good, but I didn’t believe she was going very far - the poor ol’ girl was done.
Playa Grande is a very small surfing beach community, located on the Pacific side of the peninsula. The beach was stunning, and apparently I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of it. It was pristine - no sea grass, no garbage, just a beautiful big white sandy beach and blue water. The waves were perfect, which explains why it is a surfing favorite, but they were also perfect for body surfing. Laura was a little timid of the water but it didn’t take long for her to build her confidence and join us in the waves - oh it was so much fun.
There were three small resorts tucked among the trees, just a rocks throw away from the water. We stayed at El Reinas by Sugar’s Monkey, a quaint little place. There was a beautiful little pool right in the middle of the courtyard and it felt so good to just jump coming back from the beach to get all the salt water off.
The rooms were large and beds were comfy. The resort was family friendly and while small, there were plenty of little ones enjoying themselves. Now it was time to head to the beach.
A neighboring resort had an open air restaurant on the second floor, right at the tree line level, where you could sit and watch the ocean. The view and the food was very good.
Our stay at Playa Grande was just one night as we continued our journey south.
