Holbox
Time to travel to Holbox (hole-bosh), an island north of Cancun with miles of white sandy beaches and no paved roads. We ferried back to Playa del Carmen, boarded an ADO bus (comparable to a Greyhound but SO much nicer), and headed to Chiquila. It took about 2 hours and was a very pleasant ride.
We arrived just in time to catch the next ferry to Holbox and before you knew it, we were back on an island.
This is what we enjoy the most - no paved roads. Everyone is on a 4 wheeler, a bicycle, or they just walk. Even the taxies are 4 wheelers.
Our apartment is over the top of the hardware store and looked interesting. We ascended the 2 flights of stairs and were so glad we only had to carry luggage up once. To our surprise, we found a small beautiful apartment that was just perfect. We settled in and headed down the main road to the beach.
The white beach stretched as far as you could see in either direction with plenty of eating, sleeping, or just drinking establishments along the way. One of the beautiful things about this beach is it is only 2 to 4 feet deep for 100 meters out or more. The wave action is very minimal and you can sit, stand, walk, or swim as much as you'd like in the shallow water. In fact, the sand bar reaches over a mile out to Mosquito Punta where the mangroves begin and all day long there is a stream of sunbathers making the trek. If you get hot, you sit down and cool off. 😎
We arrived at dinner time so we found a place to eat, explored the beach a bit and called it a day. But had to stop and watch a little bit of the local basketball game in the center of town on our way back. So fun!
