Tumbo & Cabbage Islands

Our last stop on the Gulf Islands tour had been recommended by Bob and BettyAnn. “It’s a beautiful little island that no one ever visits and it’s a national park.” It’s on the east side of Saturna so is subject to the winds on the Strait. We waited for a day with no wind and headed out. This was the highlight of the trip. It’s two little islands with a long bay, ten park bouys and amazing hikes. Where there is green on the map, at low tide, it is rocks and you can walk from one island to the other.

First day, we hiked Tumbo Island on the south end. Interesting, there were a lot of little tide pools with nothing in them. Occassionally, you’d see a little crab scurry, but not like we were expecting.

We found this amazing Madrona tree growing out of the cliff of the rock. I was trying to get farther out on it, but Sue convinced me we didn’t need any injuries on our last day in Canada.

With the north winds, we battled smoke but what beautiful sunsets they make. This was our last night in Canada and it didn’t fail to show off.

The next morning, we hiked Cabbage Island at low tide. We could have just walked forever but winds were picking up and we needed to get back to the US. We will definitely come back again and spend more time. It was truly a treasure. Thanks Bob for the recommendation.
