Monkey Island - Pirate Channel

Across the lake from town is a small, winding channel that used to connect the lake and the ocean. For many years, the pirates used this channel to hide, rest, fix, and resupply their boats. Over time, the vegetation grew over the mouth and closed the channel off from the open sea. It is very shallow so it made me wonder how they navigated this without running aground.

At the mouth is a small island, called Monkey island. Many years ago, locals started to build a small bar on this island in the shape of a boat to commemorate the pirate boat. Unfortunately, the construction was causing damage to the lake and the project was abandoned. Only the front of the boat was finished and while it’s showing its age, it still remains.

On the back side of the small island, the ‘monkey pirate’.
